Although the Geneva Conventions stated that all POWs must receive humane treatment, most of the prison camps in Vietnam did not follow the rules. POWs in Vietnam prison camps were not given any medical care or a livable place to stay. They were locked in small dark cells that reeked of urine, sweat and vomit. It was common for camps to be infested with rats, mosquitos, and cockroaches. Other prisoners were sent outside to be locked in animal like cages. While in the prison camps, POWs were often beaten and tortured by the Vietnamese soldiers to get them to tell secrets about the war. Also, POWs were only given small amounts of spoiled food and contaminated water.
